The IBM 7208 model 345 60 GB external 8mm tape drive is a stand-alone,
SCSI-based, 8mm streaming tape drive that attaches to the RS/6000 family
of workstations and servers. It delivers a media capacity of 60 GB (150
GB with 2.5:1 compression*) data storage per cartridge and a sustained
data transfer rate of 12 MB/sec. (30 MB/sec. with 2.5:1 compression*).
This is 3X the capacity and 4X the data transfer rate of its predecessor,
the IBM 7208 model 341. The model 345 incorporates hardware featuring
the IBM developed ALDC (Adaptive Lossless Data Compression) algorithm
which typically delivers 2.5:1 data compression. Result: 150GB per cartridge
at 30MB/sec.
The model 345 tape drive uses new MammothTape™ technology AME (advanced
metal evaporated) media with SmartClean™. As a result, user intervention
and cost of ownership are reduced and data integrity is increased. The
model 345 will also read tapes written by the IBM 7208 Model 341/2, the
IBM 7331 Model 305, the IBM 3449, and the IBM 7334, protecting your investment
in 8mm technology and ensuring availability of your data when you need
it. Providing an excellent migration and interchange path from other 8mm
tape drives, the IBM 7208 model 345 is a cost-effective solution for save/restore
and for archiving requirements.
The 7208 Model 345 is a large-capacity, high-performance 8mm tape drive
that features:
- Cartridge capacity up to 60 GB native per cartridge (150 GB with 2:5.1
compression)
- Adaptive Lossless Data Compression (ALDC), a state-of-the-art compression
technique developed by IBM
- Data transfer rate up to 12 MB per second (30 MB per second with 2.5:1
compression)
- Ability to read previous 20 GB, 8mm AME tape formats
- MammmothTape™ technology: Helical scan, rotating head technology for
increased capacity and reliability
- LVD/SE Ultra Wide SCSI-2 attachment (68-pin) that connects to LVD/SE
adapters
- Self-cleaning with SmartClean media , reduced operator intervention
and cost of operation; increased reliability and data integrity
- External, self-powered packaging
- The IBM 7208 Model 345 is an external stand-alone tape storage device
Media features:
- High 60 GB capacity per cartridge (150GB compressed*) for outstanding
price/performance
- Two-meter length of cleaning tape in each cartridge reduces user
- AME coating improves overall readability and reliability
- SmartClean™ data cartridges, available in 60 GB (225m), 40 GB (150m)
and 20 GB (75m) capacities
- Significantly higher data reliability compared to metal-particle media
Note: Although the 7208 Model 345 Tape Drive can give you high tape performance,
other components of the system may limit the actual performance achieved.
In addition, the compression technology used in the tape drive can double
the amount of data that can be stored on the media; however, the actual
degree of compression achieved is highly sensitive to the characteristics
of the data that is being compressed.
Because of its read compatibility with earlier 8mm AME tape formats,
the Model 345 is an excellent replacement for older 7208 8mm tape drives.
With its higher capacity and performance, it also is an excellent replacement
for IBM 1/4-inch models (7207) or 4mm models (7206), and other competitive
products where this capability is needed.
If you are considering tape libraries with software for automatic backup
because of rapid growth in online storage and a need to reduce manual
operations and interventions, try the compatible IBM 7334 Model 410 8mm
Tape Library with an 8mm tape drive. The IBM 7332 4mm DDS-2 Tape Autoloader
is also available to meet lower capacity and performance requirements.
If you need higher-performance tape drives, consider the IBM Magstar
MP Tape Subsystem, the IBM Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem, or the IBM 3490
Enhanced Capability Magnetic Tape Subsystem. The Magstar 3590 and the
3490 are available for inclusion in the Magstar 3494 Tape Library.
