| The 3151 IBM ASCII Display Station is a stand-alone, high-quality,
14-inch, monochrome display station used for displaying up to 3,300 characters
and for entering data into and retrieving data from a host processor.
The IBM 3151 14-inch monitor has an actual viewable screen size of 11.4
inches when measured diagonally. The 3151 also communicates with the 128
7-bit ASCII/ISO character set or the 256 8-bit ASCII/ISO character set,
depending on machine mode and language. The 3151 is offered in a range
of models featuring an asynchronous communication interface with a 7-bit
or 8-bit word length, using RS-232-C (CCITT V.24/28) interface expandable
to additional RS-422-A (CCITT V.11) interface. The 3151 provides a native
mode, 3101 mode, and various emulation modes that allow the 3151 to attach
to a variety of host processors. The 3151 native mode is compatible with
the native modes of the 3161 or the 3162 with limitations.
Model Abstract 3151-510
The 3151 IBM ASCII Display Station Model 510 offers Green or phosphor
colors and a 80/132-character column display. It is IBM PS/2 compatible
with a 101-key keyboard. The Model 510 also has customer-recappable keytops
and a RS-232-C or RS-422-A main port interface, selectable by the user
or host application with speeds up to 38.4K bps, with DTR pacing for outbound
data in RS-232-C. The Model 510 also offers the choice of four machine
modes by the operator or host: IBM 3151 Echo mode, IBM 3151 PC mode, IBM
3151 PC II mode, and 925PC mode. The IBM 3151 Echo mode is a superset
of the IBM 3161 ASCII Display Station, operating in Echoplex, but does
not support definable F-keys and Local mode. The outbound data stream
of the IBM 3151 PC and IBM 3151 PC II modes is a 3151 Echo mode data stream
modified to Code Page 00437 (IBM 3151 PC) and Code Page 00850 (IBM 3151
PC II). The inbound data stream of the IBM 3151 PC mode and 3151 PC II
mode is the IBM PS/2 Set 1 Scan Codes. The outbound data stream of the
925PC modes is a subset of TeleVideo 925 data stream modified to Code
Page 00437. The inbound data stream of 925PC modes is the IBM PS/2 Set
1 Scan Codes or Code Page 00437. Functions in IBM 3151 Echo, IBM 3151
PC, and IBM 3151 PC II modes include a Microsoft or compatible mouse attachment
to the auxiliary port, commands for window presentation assist (Box, Rectangle,
Rectangle Copy, Fill Character/Attribute into Rectangle), functions emulating
Interrupt 10H routines of IBM PC System BIOS, and ANSI X3.64 type buffer/cursor
addressing command.

Model Description 3151-510
The 3151 Model 51X displays 1,920 (80 by 24), 2,000 (80 by 25), 3,168
(132 by 24) and 3,300 (132 by 25) characters. An alphameric character
is represented in a character cell of 9 x 15 or 9 x 14 dot matrix. The
data displayed uses the 128 characters of the 7-bit ASCII/ISO codes and
an additional character set containing 24 line-drawing graphics, ten script
characters, and ten subscript characters. A line drawing character is
represented in a 9 x 15 or 9 x 14 dot matrix to create a contiguous line.
Echo-transmission mode provides the capability to transmit a character
over a communication line upon depression of each key.
System Attachment
Series/1, System/88, 9370, and non-IBM mini-computers attach the 3151
with RS-232-C CCITT V.24/28) interface, or RS-422-A (CCITT V.11) interface
both in 50 to 19.2K bps line speed, or via a modem with RS-232-C (CCITT
V.24/28) interface. The 3151 attaches to Series/1 with Multi-function
attachment feature (#1310) in RS-232-C and RS-422-A, with Feature-programmable
4-line Adapter feature (#2096) in RS-232-C, or with Asynchronous Terminal
8-Line Adapter (RPQ D02350) in RS-422-A. S/370 Processors attach the 3151,
via 270X, 370X, or 3725/6 with RS-232-C (CCITT V.24/28) interface in 50
to 1200 bps line speed, via 370X/8100, 3725/8100 or 3726/8100 with RS-232-C
(CCITT V.24/28) interface in 50 to 9600 bps without modem and in the modem
speeds (but not exceeding 9600 bps) with modem, and via a protocol converter
with RS-232-C (CCITT V.24/28) interface in 50 to 19.2K bps line speed.
The System/36, System/38, and AS/400 attach the 3151 with RS-232-C (CCITT
V.24/28) interface or RS-422-A (CCITT V.11) interface both in 110 to 19.2K
bps line speed. The S/36-38 attachment is via the 5208 ASCII-5250 Link
Protocol Converter or ROLMbridge 5250 Link Protocol Converter. The 3151
can be attached to the 6150/6151 via the 4-port Asynchronous 232-C Adapter
or 4-port Asynchronous 422A Adapter (see Note), and operate in native
mode in 50 to 19.2K bps line speed.
The 3151 can be attached to the IBM Personal System/2 via its resident
Asynchronous RS-232-C port, via Dual Asychronous Adaper/A (#3033) (6450347)
in RS-232-C. or via an IBM Multiport/2 Adapter (#6263) in RS-232-C and
RS-422-A.
The 3151 may be attached to a 4361 processor via the 4361 feature EIA/CCITT
interface (#3701) with the 4361 feature Line Attachment Base for Non-clocked
Modems (#4696). It may operate at speeds up to 2,400 bps, in 3101 mode
and 3151 native mode. The attachment must be via the EIA RS-232-C (CCITT
V.24/28) interface, either via asynchronous modem with switched or nonswitched
telephone line, or via direct attachment at distance up to 12m (40 ft).
For direct connection to the 8100 system a modem cable must be used,
with extension to the 8100 direct connect cable not exceeding 9.1m (30.0
ft). The total maximum cable length from the 8100 system to the 3151 may
not exceed 12.2m (40.0 ft). |
