Model Abstract 2105-750
The ESS Model 750 is a new model in the family of Enterprise Storage Servers.
It provides an entry point into the ESS product family comprised of the
ESS Model 750 and the ESS Model 800. The ESS Model 750 offers many of
the features of the ESS Model 800, but is based on dual two-way processors
with up to 16 GB cache and 2 GB of NVS in contrast to the dual four or
six-way processors available with the ESS Model 800. With support for
up to 4.6 TB of physical capacity and eight 2Gb Fibre Channel/FICON or
ESCON host adapters, the ESS Model 750 is designed to provide an attractive
price/performance balance for clients requiring smaller configurations.
The ESS Model 750 is well-suited for environments where the workload access
densities average two operations per second per gigabyte.
The ESS Model 750 supports FlashCopy and FlashCopy Version 2, as well
as PPRC and PPRC Version 2, for point-in-time copy options and advanced
metropolitan or long-distance business continuance solutions. The ESS
Model 750 also includes support for zSeries performance enhancers; PAV,
priority I/O queuing, and multiple allegiance. Additionally, the ESS Model
750 is upgradable to the ESS Model 800, offering clients' investment protection
and full ESS scalability.
Model Abstract 2105-800
The IBM 2105 TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server (ESS) Model 800, the
third generation of IBM intelligent storage, sets yet another milestone
in ESS functionality, flexibility, performance, and overall value available
to meet today's storage requirements. As demands for data increase, so
must storage capacity, and accessibility from heterogeneous server environments.
As business transaction volumes increase, storage throughput and response
time must scale to meet increasingly demanding quality of service agreements.
As SANs migrate to 2 Gigabit (2Gb) technology, storage should be able
to exploit this bandwidth. As faster disk drive technology, spinning at
15,000 rpm, and combinations of RAID technology are brought to the marketplace,
storage administrators need to be able to configure solutions that best
meet business needs. The ESS Model 800 is designed to address all these
requirements while helping to protect investments you have already made
in servers, SANs, software, storage hardware, and advanced functions.
The Model 800 is designed to provide performance, scalability, and flexibility
while supporting 24 x 7 operations to help provide the access and protection
demanded by today's business environment, and delivering the flexibility
and centralized management needed to lower long-term costs.
The Model 800 integrates a new generation of hardware, including faster
symmetrical multi-processors (SMP) with an optional Turbo feature, 64
GB cache, double internal bandwidth, and 2Gb Fibre Channel/FICON Host
Adapters. This hardware, in addition to RAID 10 support and 15,000 rpm
drives, enables the Model 800 to deliver excellent levels of performance
and throughput.
The ESS is IBM's premier storage solution for use in Storage Area Networks
(SANs). It provides:
- Support for the intermix of FICON (F10, F20), ESCON, Fibre Channel
and SCSI attachments, making the ESS a natural fit for storage and server
consolidation requirements.
- Concurrent support for all your major server platforms, including
OS/390, OS/400, Windows NT, Windows 2000, NetWare, and many varieties
of UNIX.
- Disk drive capacity intermix support providing extensive flexibility
with a vast number of configuration options so price, performance, and
capacity can be optimized to meet specific server and applications requirements
-- all within a single ESS.
- Excellent scalability from 420 GB to over 1.6 TB (E10), 11.2 TB (E20),
3.3 TB (F10), 22.4 TB (F20) of RAID-5 effective capacity.
- Extensive storage management capabilities, including:
- FlashCopy for fast data duplication
- Advanced Remote Copy Services for your synchronous and asynchronous
backup and disaster recovery needs
- Extensive StorWatch(TM) management capability through the Web
- ESS API to easily manage multiple storage devices (on select models)
- Superior performance with options and innovations to meet your changing
requirements
- High availability to support your e-business and other mission-critical
applications

not get fully utilized due to overheads on logical devices and/or a loss
of capacity due to a configured set of logical devices.
