The IBM Infoprint 4000 IR1/IR2 is a high-speed, high-production, or
Print On Demand, continuous forms, all-points-addressable duplex and simplex
laser printing system. It offers switchable resolutions of 480/600 dpi
with a choice of throughput speeds of up to 464 impressions-per-minute
(IPM) in duplex or up to 232 IPM in simplex. These speeds are quoted as
2-up, side-by-side 8.5 x 11-inch portrait. Respective throughput speeds
for European format A4 paper sizes are up to 436 IPM in duplex and up
to 218 IPM in simplex.
The Infoprint 4000 IR1/IR2 is based on the industry-leading 3900 family
and its state-of-the-art Advanced Function Common Control Unit (AFCCU).
The IBM Infoprint 4000 IR1/IR2 is equipped with the next generation Advanced
Function Common Control Unit (AFCCU) which enables resolution switching
from 480 dpi to 600 dpi and vice-versa. With the switchable resolution,
the you can now print your traditional IPDS production datastreams, in
either duplex or dual simplex, in 240, 300, or 600 dpi resolution. For
POD the customer can print their duplex applications at 600 dpi resolution.
In addition, the new AFCCU enables host-managed paper-jam recovery through
the your post-processing equipment, new operator function enabling flexibility,
512MB of performance enabling memory, and support for adding toner while
the printer is in operation.
If you are in the publishing, banking, communications, insurance, utilities,
and other industries who send statements, bills, policies, and other forms
of communications to your customer, you can utilize the IBM Infoprint
4000 IR1/IR2 to maximize the productivity of their printing operations.
With the capability and flexibility of receiving either 240 dpi, 300 dpi
or 600 dpi datastreams and printing them on a single printer, you can
have the option of reducing overall printing costs by eliminating redundant
printers that up to now were necessary to maintain the capability and
options of printing either 240, 300, or 600 dpi datastreams.
The IBM Infoprint 4000 High Resolution Duplex Printer Model IR1 is the
first engine of the duplex system. It gives you the flexibility of switching
the resolution of your high-speed production printers to either 480 dots-per-inch
(dpi) or 600 dpi. This means you can run your 240, 300, or 600 dpi datastreams
all on the same printing system in either duplex or dual simplex mode.
This system offers you a solution for printing traditional publishing
documents for just-in-time manufacturing environments in duplex mode at
600 dpi resolution. The IR1 is controlled by the AFCCU which is attached
to the IR2. An enhanced verification feature for duplex printing applications
improves page integrity. To protect your printer investment, currently-installed
IBM 3900-DR1/DR2 printing systems can be upgraded with all the features
and functions of the IR1/IR2, including the newest AFCCU and the switchable
resolution.

Paper Handling
Input Continuous Forms
The Infoprint 4000 IR1/IR2 Printing System has a paper supply capacity
of 16 inches (406 mm) of fanfold paper.
Installing special feature number 4710 provides the attachment for high-capacity
roll-feed devices that will enable the customer to fully utilize the high-productivity
capabilities of the IBM Infoprint 4000 family. Such roll-feed input devices
enable continuous printing of several hours between paper loading.
There is a standard splicing station to minimize waste and increase operator
efficiency.
Output Continuous Forms
The IBM Infoprint 4000 IR1/IR2 Printing System is provided with a stacker
on each engine with a maximum paper capacity of up to 14 inches (356 mm)
in height. The actual height may be operator adjusted to limit the weight
of the output stack of paper. The stacker can stack paper with lengths
between 7 and 14 inches (178 and 356 mm).
The ability to attach post-processing equipment (feature codes 4710 and
4720) allows additional input and output capabilities.
Supplies
Supplies used with the IBM Infoprint 4000 models IS1 and IS2 are the
same as those used with the 3900-0W1.
Regular Supply Items:
- Infoprint /4000/3900 Toner (P/N 1402822)
- Unit: 1,360 gram bottle; part number represents one bottle
- Packaging: Eight bottles per carton
- Minimum order quantity: Eight of P/N 1402822, which equals one
carton
- Enhanced Printing Toner (P/N 1402833)
- The new toner is a polyester based toner. It will be packaged
in a new bottle having a slightly different interlock and a GREEN
cap. The different interlock will prevent the new toner bottle from
being attached to the Toner Inlet of a printer not having the Enhanced
Printing Toner Adapter Kit installed.
- When printing at 4% coverage on 100 square inches per foot, the
Yield (Note 1) = 48,500 feet per 1.5kg (3.3lb.) bottle.
- High-Speed Printers (Model IS2, ID3, ID4) and High-Resolution
(Model IR1, IR2, IR3, and IR4) may experience a yield approximately
10% less (43,600 feet per 1.5kg bottle).
- Infoprint 4000/3900 Developer Mix (P/N 1402823)
- Unit: 3.5 kilogram bottle; part number represents one bottle
