Models: IBM 3581-H23

The IBM 3581 Model H23 comes with an HVD Ultra SCSI attachment for connection to a wide spectrum of open systems servers.

The IBM 3581 TotalStorage Ultrium Tape Autoloader models offer high capacity, performance, and technology designed for the midrange open systems environment. These models incorporate a single Linear Tape-Open (LTO) IBM TotalStorage Ultrium 2 Tape Drive, which more than doubles tape drive performance over the generation 1 LTO Ultrium Tape Drives (Ultrium 1), up to 35 MB/sec native data transfer rate (70 MB/sec with 2:1 compression). In addition, with the use of the IBM TotalStorage LTO Ultrium 200 GB Data Cartridge, the Ultrium 2 Tape Drive has the capability of writing twice as much data, up to 200 GB native capacity (400 GB with 2:1 compression). IBM Ultrium 2 Tape Drives can read and write original LTO Ultrium Data Cartridges at original Ultrium 1 capacities and with an improved performance of up to 20 MB/sec native data transfer rate (40 MB/sec with 2:1 compression)

The IBM Ultrium Tape Autoloader is an ideal solution for handling backup, save/restore, and archival data storage needs for small-to medium-size environments. With its single Ultrium drive and up to seven tape cartridges, the IBM Autoloader is designed to fully leverage Linear Tape-Open (LTO) technology to cost-effectively handle growing storage requirements.

As your storage needs grow, you can build on this investment by moving to the IBM Ultrium Scalable Tape Library (compressed data capacity of up to 14.4 TB) or the IBM UltraScalable Tape Library (compressed data capacity of up to 496.2 TB).

Advanced Features:

With its higher capacity and performance, the IBM Autoloader is an excellent alternative to DLT, 1/4-inch, 4 mm, or 8 mm tape drives. The IBM Autoloader has a maximum media capacity of 1.4 TB native and 2.8TB of compressed data with a sustained data transfer rate of up to 30 MB/sec (compressed). The sequential or random access autoloader can fit into the same space as multiple stand-alone drives. In addition, two IBM Autoloader units can be rack-mounted side-by-side--taking up only seven vertical inches.

The IBM Autoloader has an LCD display and indicators for power, drive and autoloader activity, error status, and message information. Controls for display, mode, and power are also available.

The IBM Autoloader features Ultra2/Wide SCSI Low Voltage Differential (LVD) or Ultra/Wide SCSI High Voltage Differential (HVD) interfaces and can attach to IBM and non-IBM servers, workstations, and personal computers that support these interfaces. As a SCSI-attached tape solution, the IBM Autoloader connects to Fibre Channel server adapters through selected IBM Storage Area Network Data Gateway products. Future plans include Fibre Channel-Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL) attachment and an optional barcode reader.

Attachment and systems support

The IBM 3581 features Ultra2/Wide SCSI LVD and Ultra/Wide SCSI HVD interfaces, attaching to IBM RS/6000(R), IBM RS/6000 SP, IBM AS/400(R), and IBM Netfinity(R) systems, and non-IBM servers, workstations, and personal computers. As a SCSI-attached tape solution, the IBM 3581 connects to Fibre Channel server adapters through selected IBM Storage Area Network Data Gateway products. Future plans include Fibre Channel-Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL) attachment.
