The IBM 3583 Model L36 has 36 cartridge slots and 1-6 IBM Ultrium Tape Drives.

The Ultrium Scalable Tape Library 3583 is part of the IBM TotalStorage LTO Tape Product family and is designed to be a high-performance, reliable, scalable tape subsystem. Designed for tape automation, the 3583 can be attached to iSeries, AS/400, pSeries, RS/6000, xSeries, Netfinity, zSeries Linux, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows 2003, SunSPARC, Hewlett-Packard and other open systems using SCSI attachment or Fibre Channel attachment.

The Ultrium Scalable Tape Library 3583 can be used for save/restore, program distribution, migration, data interchange, automatic migration of data between disk storage and tape, and mass storage for data archive. Storage and tape management for the 3583 is provided by software such as Tivoli(TM) Storage Manager and other industry-leading compatible software offerings.

Scalable Automation

The Ultrium Scalable Tape Library 3583 is a stand-alone automated tape library designed for desktop operation. With an optional feature, the 3583 can be mounted in an industry-standard ANSI EIA-310-D 19-inch rack using 14 EIA units of space. The libraries use the IBM LTO Ultrium Tape Drives for faster data transfer and reliability in automated library service. The tape handling mechanism is designed to reliably move cartridges to IBM Ultrium tape drives within the library. A bar code reader is included with each library model to enable reading the cartridge labels.

The Ultrium Scalable Tape Library 3583 is designed for easy expansion. It can accommodate from one to six IBM LTO Ultrium 1 or 2 Tape Drives and from 18 to 72 cartridges. The 3583 has cartridge slot storage capacities of 18, 36, and 72 cartridges in the Models L18, L36, and L72 respectively. The 3583 Models L18 and L36 can be field upgraded to increase their capacity up to 72 cartridges and six drives. Cartridge expansion is in increments of 18 cartridges. One IBM Ultrium drive is required and 5 additional drives are available for factory or field installation. Upgrade features are modular units that are easy to install.

The Ultrium Tape Drives in the 3583 utilize IBM LTO Ultrium tape cartridges, designed for increased tape speeds and high-density data recording. The Ultrium 2 Tape Drive supports the Ultrium 200 GB Data Cartridge, with 200 GB native capacity (400 GB with 2:1 compression). The 3583 library can contain up to 14.4 TB (28.8 TB with 2:1 compression), using up to six IBM Ultrium 2 Tape Drives and Ultrium 200 GB data cartridges. The Ultrium 2 Tape Drives and cartridges can be resident in the same Ultrium Tape Library 3583 frame with original Ultrium 1 Tape Drives and Ultrium 100 GB Data Cartridges. Both cartridges have been designed to provide several enhancements over previous tape technologies. The cartridge case is specially designed for use in automated libraries and is designed for repeated, unattended, trouble-free handling. The tape itself is an advanced metal particle tape developed for durability and capacity.

By fully leveraging advanced Linear Tape-Open (LTO) technology, the IBM Ultrium Scalable Tape Library provides an ideal solution for cost-effectively handling a wide range of backup, archive, and disaster recovery data storage needs.
