The IBM ESCON* Converter (ESCC) Model 001 attaches many
existing parallel channel I/O devices to ESCON channels.
Model Abstract 9034-001
The IBM ESCON Converter Model 001 offers parallel channel
I/O attachment, via ESCON channels. The ESCC Model 001 allows attachment
of many Input/Output (I/O) devices with parallel channel adapters to ESCON
channels. This provides a migration path to the ES Connection Architecture*
environment without modifying either the I/O control unit or the application
software.
Highlights
- Protects the customer's hardware and software investment by allowing
attachment of many parallel I/O devices to ESCON channels without having
to modify application software, databases, or most I/O control units.
- Reduces system disruption by allowing customers to install their ES
Connection Architecture environment and use the static switching capability
of the ESCON Director. This minimizes reconfiguration interruptions
as customers migrate to ESCON capable I/O devices.
- Utilizes some of the ESCON channel capabilities of extended distance
and reduced cable bulk.
Devices Supported
IBM ESCON Converter Device Attachment List:
Systems:
The following systems support ESCON channels operating in ESCON Converter
Mode:
- ES/3090* 180J and Above Except for Model 250
- ES/3090-9000T* Models
- ES/9000*
I/O Device Attachment Capability:
IBM devices not on this attachment list require an RPQ
for 9034 attachment and support. Devices that are included on this list
have been formally tested as a part of attachment testing.
The maximum fiber distance is the supported distance for
that specific device. Additional fiber distance requests require an RPQ
for 9034 attachment and support. An RPQ should include the device type,
physical configuration requirements, and the required data rate(s) for
the device(s) to be attached.
Distance and device limitations are based on critical timing
constraints between the 9034, the cooperating serial channel, and the
device to be attached. Therefore, any extended distance requests, or any
attachment of additional control units or devices not on this I/O attachment
list, require an RPQ for support.
Consider the submission of an RPQ. Extended distance support,
under certain conditions, is possible. Support for additional IBM devices
and control units is also possible.

Notes:
- Data Transfer Modes are defined as follows:
DS - Data Streaming.
HST - High Speed Transfer (DCI alternate tag mode).
DCI - Direct Current Interlocked (single tag mode).
- Distances stated are when using 62.5/125 micrometer fiber optic cable.
A maximum fiber optic cable distance of 2000 meters (6562 feet) is possible
when using 50/125 micrometer fiber, except when attaching 3880 and/or
3990 DASD control units or when an ESCON Director (ESCD) is in the path.
By utilizing the signal repeating capability of the ESCON Director a
maximum fiber optic cable distance of 3000 meters (9843 feet) is possible
when using 50/125 micrometer fiber, except when attaching 3880 and/or
3990 DASD control units, and/or 3420-8 Tape units. When attaching 3880
and 3990 DASD control units, and 3420-8 Tape units the distances and
restrictions described in the above table apply. No additional distance
is obtained by attaching a ESCC through an ESCON Director when using
62.5/125 micrometer fiber optic cable. These distances do not include
122 meters (400 feet) of OEMI Bus and Tag cables.
- Subtract 200 meters for every ESCON Director in the path.
- OEMI Bus and Tag cable distance between the ESCC and the 3803-2 with
the 3420-8 Tape unit attached is limited to 25.9 meters (85 feet). A
3803-2 with RPQ #870021 (CLOI - Cable Length Offset Interlock) is not
supported by the IBM ESCON Converter. RPQ #870021 must be removed for
the 3803-2 to operate with an ESCC.
- 3088 units require EC C22761. The maximum Channel To Channel (CTC)
fiber optic cable distance can be increased to 6000 meters by using
IBM ESCON Converters and 62.5/125 micrometer fiber (4000 meters using
50/125 micrometer fiber).
- Data transfer mode and maximum data rate depend on the I/O device
attached.
- The IBM ESCON Converter requires a dedicated connection thru an ESCON
Director.
- An ESCON channel operating in ESCON Converter Mode cannot address
the control unit port (Port x'FE') on an ESCON Director.
- The 3880-23 with the Airlines RPQ may experience degraded performance
when operating in Direct mode at distances greater than 600 meters (1969
feet). There should be no performance impact when operating in Record
Access mode at the maximum fiber distances stated. Direct and Record
Access mode refer to the operation of the 3880-23. Please refer to 3880
documentation for a description of Direct and Record Access modes, and
for further details on the operation of the 3880.
- 3745 communications controllers may require field EC ECA077 or later,
or manufacturing EC A98088 or later. These ECs correct a Condition Code
2 on a Start Subchannel instruction, or any I/O instruction, that follows
a clear.
- The RISC System 6000 emulates a 3088 channel-to-channel control unit.
- Support is granted only to PS/2s with MicroChannel to Mainframe Connection
(MMC) running with 3088 emulation microcode.
- Support is granted only to PS/2s with MicroChannel to Mainframe Connection
(MMC) running with 3422 emulation microcode, which supports Optical
Media Attach (OMA).
